The Department of Service and Information System Engineering (UPC) is an interdisciplinary unit that focuses on the common ground between service science, management and engineering (SSME) and information systems and technology.
The Department is involved in teaching the bachelor’s degree in Informatics Engineering, coordinated by the Barcelona School of Informatics. It is also responsible for the Specialization in Service Engineering of the Master in Innovation and Research in Informatics, and for teaching some of the subjects for the Erasmus Mundus Master’s Programme in Information Technologies for Business Intelligence.
The Department’s main research lines are those covered by the Group of Software and Service Engineering (GESSI), the Information Modelling and Processing (MPI) group and the SUSHITOS (Services for Ubiquitous Social and Humanistic Information Technologies and Open Source) group.
The Department was created on 26 November 2009 and is currently one of the two youngest departments at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. It was formed from the information systems group at our university to coordinate the teaching, research and technology transfer activities that would enable the University to integrate SSME into its existing work in the area of information systems.
SSME is an emerging discipline closely linked to the field of information systems, and the relationship between them offers a range of research and teaching possibilities which have yet to be fully explored. The Department organises a seminar programme to promote the analysis and discussion of scientific, technical, educational and social issues related to these areas.
